INDONESIA WILL BE COLONIZED IN 2045

 

The idea of a 'Indonesia Emas', a term often used by Jokowi, in 2045 is not a speculative idea. Indonesia has the potential to become a developed country when it has reached a century old. The reason is Indonesia would have reached demographic dividend during the year of 2045. It means that 70 percent of Indonesia's population are of productive age (15-64 years) while the remaining 30 percent are unproductive residents (aged 14 years and under over 65 years). When the population of productive age is abundant, the nation's productivity will increase rapidly, economic growth bolted and Indonesia could become a world economic power. Conversely, if Indonesia couldn't empower this demographic opportunity, it will be left unprepared to face Industrial Revolution.

Prof. Schwab explained, the 4.0 Industrial Revolution has changed how humans live and work. Unlike the previous industrial revolution, this 4.0 industrial revolution has a wider scale, scope and complexity. Technological advancements integrating the physical, digital and biological worlds has influenced other disciplines; science, economics, industry and government. In line with Prof. Schwab, Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati also believes, the Idustrial Revolution 4.0 in the next five years will remove 35 percent of the types of work. And even in the next 10 years the type of work that will be lost will increase to 75 percent.

This demographic dividend is a big challenge for Indonesia, if we can utilize it then Indonesia will become a developed country. If not, however, Indonesia will lose the momentum to advance during Industrial Revolution 4.0. Other fundamental aspect that needs to be considered is education. Education, especially programming, plays an important role to prepare young people for Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Current education must be more oriented to solve the technological challenges from Industrial Revolution 4.0. This premise leads us to the question of whether the current curriculum could prepare youth for Industrial Revolution 4.0. The answer for this question is to increase technology literacy in Indonesia. As said by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, there is a lesson more important than mathematics, namely programming.

The relation of coding is relevant with the current condition of technology companies. Ten years ago, oil companies dominated the list of the most valuable companies in the world. However, nowadays oil companies have lost their domination, they are replaced by technology companies. So it is important for us to realize the importance of learning programming. In addition to gain understanding of technology, programming can also help prepare youths to face labor reduction in the future. With programming we can make our own company, make the application or software itself so that there is no need to worry about job availability.
